Next phase of Muizenberg Beach huts restoration under way

The refurbishment of the iconic beach huts commenced this week, and is set to be completed late in November.
The City of Cape Town is excited to announce the commencement of the next phase of the Muizenberg Huts Refurbishment Project. This is a partnership which builds on the excellent work done by the Friends of the Muizenberg Huts.
Following Phase 1 of the beach huts refurbishment to Surfers Corner; the Recreation and Parks Department with the support of the Corporate Project Programme and Portfolio Management Department has commenced with the implementation of Phase 2 of the beach huts refurbishment to the Muizenberg East Beach Side to the value of R5,9million.
'This joint initiative with Friends of the Muizenberg Huts aims to preserve this proud Cape Town tourism symbol, which also forms part of the rich cultural and historical heritage of Muizenberg. Through thoughtful design, we will ensure that these iconic huts continue to be a symbol of the area's charm and character for generations to come. We look forward to working closely with the community and stakeholders throughout this project to create a vibrant and sustainable beachfront destination for locals and visitors alike,' said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
Phase 2 involves the refurbishment of 26 double huts and 10 single huts.
Construction work started on Monday, 18 September, and is expected to be completed by the end of November.
The scope of work includes:
- The replacement of the ground floor joists, timber bearers, and roof rafters with treated timber.
- The replacement of the sidewall panels and roof covering with Nutec cladding.
- The reconstruction of the timber staircase and the installation of concrete bases for the staircase posts.
- The reconstruction of timber seating benches inside the beach huts.
- The replacement of the timber floor boards and timber doors.
- The replacement of all steel bolted connections with hot-dipped galvanised bolts and plates.
- Wood treatment of all timber members, repainting the side cladding and roof covering.
'Once this project is completed, all of the beach huts on Muizenberg Beach will be fully refurbished. The City also appreciates the continued involvement of the Friends of the Muizenberg huts, with whom the Recreation and Parks Department has a cooperative agreement around the maintenance and management of the huts. The friends group also managed to secure a donation of Everite cladding for the refurbishment project. However, I want to appeal to the public at large to help us preserve these iconic structures that help make the Cape Town coastline so unique, by using them with care, and helping to protect them,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.
